Okay, this is something I noticed a few times since being in Kalamazoo. I just noticed it again while reading the Sunday edition of the Kalamazoo Gazette, and I thought I would share a small tiny section of the court decisions part of the newspaper with you.
"Scroggins pleaded guilty May 19. In addition to the jail time, her driver's license was suspended for a year. Buhl also allowed her to be released from jail for treatment.
"In addition, she has to pay $375 for the services of an attorney or face another 30 days in jail, and she has to pay $210 for costs. Buhl credited her with 43 days of her sentence already served."
Okay, this is the part that's bothering me. I thought that an attorney would be provided for you if you could not afford one, but not that you'd have to pay for the attorney AFTER the trial. Am I missing something here? Or is this some sort of loophole they're using to just get around the whole idea that poor people are again easy targets.
